Sample Image Analysis

Page history last edited by Stacy Takacs 13 years, 6 months ago

Create a "New Page" and upload the picture that you analyzed for Short Essay #1 to "Images and Files." Your task is to caption and annotate the picture to clarify its meaning for others (using your original analysis as a starting point). Insert a two column table to ensure the caption and annotation are next to the image. For the caption, give it a name that indicates its significance. For the annotation, identify 2-3 elements of the picture that are significant to the proper understanding of the photo. Annotations should be between 100-200 words and should draw attention to specific features of the image that support your analysis. Sign your contribution with your first and last name at the end. Here is an example:

Caption: Political cartoon about US Foreign Policy and Domestic Race Relations

Annotation: This cartoon implies that racial segregation and discrimination in the United States is something Hitler might recognize and identify with. The caption "Satisfaction in Berlin" makes this clear. It suggests we are no better than the fascists we claim to detest. The open-mouthed smile on Hitler's face (which is recognizable by its small mustache and long comb-over) affirms how pleased he is to see the US adopting policies of racial discrimination that are much like those he pursued in Germany. Finally, the text at the bottom of the cartoon even suggests that discrimination is a "campaign" orchestrated by Hitler to undermine the US from within. Overall, the image links domestic policy to foreign policy and argues for civil rights in both spheres (if only for PR purposes). The image suggests the US is hypocritical when we discriminate at home but fight for civil rights abroad.
