New York has been the home to the Yankees since 1913, and in over the one hundred year history the franchise has become the most dominating team in the sport. The Yankees have employed the most prolific players and polarizing owners in the sport while producing the most world series titles in Major League Baseball. From humble beginnings this team has come to define the sport of baseball, and in the process created an image of exceptionlism and dominance that has created the largest fan following of any team. However as the saying goes "success breeds enemies" the Yankees have also become one of the most hated teams in American professional sports, Why is it that a team that so typifies American ideals, like success and dominance, so easily hated? With a franchise history that mimics the blueprint of American Dream success, of humble beginnings to strong competetor to eventual dominance in the desired market, the Yankees are an American success story. Along with a history studded with players that typify many American qualities that as a national culture we hold so dear. The rags to riches qualities of a player like Babe Ruth, or the hard work and determination of Lou Gehrig to the exceptional talents of Mickey Mantel these Yankees represent the qualities that we recognize as key to the American Dream.
