Women and Witches today

The Bible teaches that woman brought sin and death into the world that she precipitated the fall of the race, that she was arraigned before the judgment seat of Heaven, tried, condemned, and sentenced. Marriage for her was to be a condition of bondage, maternity a period of suffering and anguish, and in silence and subjection, she was to play the role of a dependant on man’s bounty for all her material wants, and for all the information she might desire. ... Here is the Bible position of woman briefly summed up. (Gibson 91) Women’s special skills and instincts are desperately needed in a world still plagued by war and by careless ravaging of the earth. The solution for using the talents of women and men equally must somehow be lying in the lap of the goddesses. Women were seen as second class citizens in the time of the Salem Witch Trials and this continued until the early 1900’s during Women's Suffrage and then gradually lessened by the woman’s movement of the seventies. The early use of gender was often critical: it was used to expose lacunae in literary, social, political, and scientific work, and to show that any history told without gender missed the crucial developments and struggles. (Cornell 38)

It seems that the only defense against witch-hunts from the masses of people, who allow them to be engaged in hysteria against people of different gender, race, religion, and creed, is to educate and teach tolerance to those of differing beliefs.
