Mc Donaldization, according to Ritzer, is  the magic and enchantment that is asscoiated with Mc Donalds. Ritzer says there are four dimensions that lie at the heart of the sucess and model of Mc Donalds and Mc Donaldization. These four components have made Mc Donalds succesful are that it offers customers, workers, and managers efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control (Ritzer 12).

Not just American business has been affected by Mc Donald’s and Mc Donaldiziation, but the education system, health care system, the entertainment industry, and even religion have all been changed.Today’s contemporary university, which is now being dubbed “McUniversity”, is showing signs of the pressure for greater efficiency.Today’s contemporary university relies heavily on multiple choice answer examinations. Publishers, of the professor’s manual, now often provide sets of questions on computer disks. Publishers now provide, the professor, withservices to streamline teaching. A professor may receive many materials in which to fill class time with (Ritzer 52-53). In education another sign of Mc Donaldization is the development of online schools, online classes, and “working adult” colleges.

Healthcare has also seen its industry change to the “Mc Donald’s way”, as well. “… medicine has been Mc Donaldized. In fact, instances of what may be termed “assembly linemedicine “ have been reported (Ritzer 54)”. In the United States is a growth of walk-in/walk-out surgical or emergency centers.Working in these centers is what is known as “McDoctors” or “Docs-in-a-box”, these doctors serve patients who want medical problems handled with maximum efficiency. “From anorganizational point of view, a McDoctors can be run more efficiently than a hospital emergency room (Ritzer 55)”.

The entertainment industry has been affected by the touch McDonaldization. No longer are the days of waiting for a movie to come the big screen and the entire family going to see the movie. Now families wait for the movie to come to their local video store ,so they can rent the movie and watch at home.

Mc Donald's has not only integrated its self into American society, culture, and soc-economically, but Mc Donald’s has intergraded into American business practices, as well.  The Mc Donald’s model has been extended into the casual dining sphere. Places like Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s, Olive Garden, and Red Lobster have looked at Mc Donald’s business practices and have found ways the implement them into their establishments (Ritzer 3).  McDonald’s has been able to streamline the process of producing food for customer without anextremely long wait. “For consumers Mc Donald’s offers the best available way to get from being hungry to being full (Ritzer 12)” Something as simple as the parking lot has been incorporated into the Mc Donald’s plan and copied by other restaurants.

The effect of Mc Donald’s was not only limited to the food industry. Many American businesses have felt the effects of Mc Donald’s.  Mc Donald’s helped in creating the need for meals that were quick and easy to fix, that need, that helped increase Mc Donald’s revenue, also gave birth to the frozen food industry. As microwaves became a house hold appliance sells increased for readymade frozen meals. As society changed items on grocery store shelves changed, too. Instead of made from scratch there were more ready made items such as: pie shells, cake mixes, pancakes, waffles, and many more (Ritzer 49).” The Mc Donaldization of food preparation and consumption has also reached the booming diet industry (Ritzer 49)”. The Mc Donald’s efficiency can felt in shopping, as well. The idea of the large indoor mall came to be popular in the mid 70’s and early 80’s. As Mc Donald’s was streamlining their service process, by introducing the drive0through, many malls were being developed. Big department stores, specialty shops, and food all in one location. Another sign of Mc Donaldiziation is popularity of the minimarket stores such as 7-Eleven, Circle K, Git-N-Go, and Quicktrip.  These stores are the “drive-through” supermarket (Ritzer 50-51). With invent of the internet, American’s can now have a streamlined process of shopping without entering the mall. All one needs is a credit card and with that the credit card industry is not immune to McDonaldiziation.Credit card companies, now, send out pre-approved forms the potential customers and the forms can be filled out online to even make the process faster ( Ritzer 51).

Religion has also seen the McDonaldization affect and been streamlined. Drive-through churches and televised religious programs are a sign of how Mc Donald’s has affected even religion. “In 1985 the Vatican announced that Catholics could receive indulgences…. through the Pope’s annual Christmas benediction on TV or radio (Ritzer 58)”. Before one had to actually travel to Rome and engage in certain activities to receive their indulgences, now one must just simply watch the Pope on television. One can also walk into any Christian bookstore and find the bookshelves stocked full of “how-to-books” claiming to be able to teach us the ’10 steps to spiritual maturity’ or how to be a successful parent in 60 minutes (Ritzer 58). Mc Donald's has not only affected the way American’s eat, where American’s eat, but one can see Mc Donald's affects in every facet of American’s lives.
