MC World

One of greatest impacts of Mc Donald’s can be seen in the country of Germany. Germany has become one of Mc Donald’s most profitable overseas markets. “Germany is not only the largest country in Europe, but it is the most Americanized (Schlosser 231)”. The traditional German restaurant is rapidly disappearing in Germany and Mc Donald’s restaurants are taken their place. In Germany, Ronald Mc Donald is sent into children’s hospitals and to schools. In Germany, as in America, Mc Donald’s advertising has been geared towards children. In Germany, as in America, Mc Donald's are found in gas stations, railway stations, and airports. Mc Donald’s are even being placed in the new Wal-Marts being built (Schlosser 233). In Germany as in America, “the golden arches have become so commonplace… that they seem almost invisible” (Schlosser 233)”.

McDonald's has locations across the world. They have made their mark on six continents, but they have yet to open a fast food restaurant in Antarctica (associatedcontent.com)”.  McDonald’s restaurants can be found all over the globe. In manycountries Mc Donald’s was the first American company to open a business, McDonald's was the first to open in the country of Turkey. There venture lead to other American fast food companies opening in Turkey (Fishwick 13). McDonald’s greatest overseas triumphs have been  in Russia and China (Fishwick 21).  “Whenever McDonald’s opens, crowds of excited customersappear. But westernized diet is, for much of the world, an expensive one (Fishwick 24)”.

As the fast food industry has grown more competitive in the United States, Mc Donald’s has looked to overseas markets for future growth and development. “The Mc Donald's Corporation recently used a new phrase to describe its hopes for foreign conquest: “global realization” (Schlosser 229)”. In the early 90’s Mc Donald’s had about 3000 restaurants globally. “The spectacular success of Mc Donald’s in the Global Village of the ‘90s (especially in Russia And China) occurred at a time when the world is full of spectacular failures… (Fishwick 13)”.In 2001 that number had grown to 15,000 restaurants in over 117 different countries and Mc Donald’s currently opens five new restaurants a day, and at least four of them are overseas (Schlosser 229).  . Mc Donald’s earns most of its profits outside of the United States and now ranks as the most widely recognized brand in the world, more familiar than Coca-Cola (Schlosser 229). “The values, tastes, and industrial practices of the American fast food industry are being exported to every corner of the globe….sociologist Benjamin R. Barber has labeled “Mc World” (Schlosser 229)”.
