Annotation

Operation Crossroads was the first set of nuclear weapons tests conducted in the Marshall Islands, and was widely publicized by the government before it occurred. Images such as this, of the "Baker" test, are clear examples of the power and magnitude of atomic weapons. This picture was taken only moments after the weapon's detonation under the water, and the scale of the explosion is obvious by contrast with the naval vessels, which were previously the largest and most impressive examples of human military achievement. The old signifiers of power are made insignificant against the power of atomic weapons.
