Title: "Fleeing a Dust Storm"

Photographer:Arthur Rothstien

Background: This photograph was taken in April, 1936 in Cimarron County Oklahoma. This photograph shows a father and his sons living in harsh condition during the Great Depression.

Symbols: The Dust Sorm that the family in fleeing in the picture can be symbolic of the Great Depression that moved into many Americans lives during this time period. The background and foreground are completely grey which gives the impression that the family is trapped in this situation. The dessolate enviornment that sourrounds the shack suggests that the people will soon fall victum to the enviornment around them. There appears to be only fence posts and dead tree trunks sticking out of the ground which is symbolic of the destruction and death of the American dream during the Great Depression.
