Film and the American Experience

Why are Americans so obsessed with entertainment?  Sure, every other culture has its own forms of entertainment that people enjoy and pursue, but Americans spent $705 billion on entertainment in 2004, easily the biggest expense after housing, food, and healthcare.  That’s more than the entire Gross National Product of Canada, or Australia (Cohen).  This number includes other forms of entertainment, including books, television, and music—entertainment is big business.  That doesn’t even take into account the amount of money spent by the particular industries required toproduce the entertainment we demand. The production of one Hollywood blockbuster typically costs anywhere from a few million all the way up to several hundred million (Cohen).

Clearly this is a very significant industry in our culture.  So why do we spend so much on movies, and entertainment in general, when it is not necessary for our survival, and does not enhance our lifestyle in any obvious way?
